Why Hansi Flick Subbed Rashford at Half-Time: Barcelona Boss Explains Man United Loanee’s First Start
Barcelona Head Coach Hansi Flick Explains Substitution of Marcus Rashford at Half-Time
Marcus Rashford’s debut start for Barcelona lasted only 45 minutes, as he was substituted at half-time in the recent match against Levante. Head coach Hansi Flick clarified that the change was a tactical decision rather than due to performance issues.
The 27-year-old English forward joined Barcelona on a season-long loan from Manchester United, with an option for a permanent transfer valued at around £30 million. He had previously made his La Liga debut as a substitute in the victory over Mallorca before earning a starting spot for the match against Levante.
Rashford played on the left wing, participating actively early in the game—forcing a save from the goalkeeper and demonstrating flair by nutmegging a defender. However, Barcelona trailed 2-0 at halftime after goals from Ivan Romero and a contentious penalty awarded to Levante.
Sensing the need for a tactical shift, Flick replaced Rashford with Dani Olmo and introduced Gavi in place of Marc Casado during the break. The substitutions proved effective, with Pedri and Ferran Torres scoring two quick goals to level the match, and an own goal in stoppage time securing a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory for Barcelona.
Flick explained the decision: “We needed to make changes in the second half. Raphinha is our primary player on the left, understanding our system well, especially when he moves inside. With the early goal, we changed our strategy accordingly.”
Despite being taken off early, Flick remained positive about Rashford’s contributions in the first half, noting his impactful moments on the pitch. “Marcus showed his qualities early on, and he can help us,” Flick added, emphasizing the importance of his role moving forward.
