Florian Wirtz Breaks British Transfer Record with £116m Move to Liverpool!
Florian Wirtz Completes £116m Transfer to Liverpool as a Record-Breaking Signing
Liverpool has announced the signing of German attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for a club-record fee of £116 million, potentially rising with bonuses. The 22-year-old France international completed his medical after returning from holiday, finalizing the five-year contract.
Wirtz’s move follows a month-long transfer saga, during which he turned down offers from Bayern Munich, Manchester City, and Real Madrid. This transfer surpasses the previous British record, which was held by Moises Caicedo’s £116m deal, and signals Liverpool’s significant investment this summer, with total spending exceeding £200 million.
The Reds have already acquired Jeremie Frimpong for £29.5 million and goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili for £29 million. They are also close to signing Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez for around £40 million. Discussions with Leverkusen, led by Sporting Director Richard Hughes, focused on positioning Wirtz as a versatile attacking midfielder, potentially as a No. 10.
Wirtz expressed excitement about his move, stating: “I feel very happy and proud. I’ve waited a long time for this moment. I’m eager for a new challenge outside the Bundesliga in the Premier League.” He added that he hopes to perform well and aims to win titles with Liverpool, with his squad number to be confirmed later this summer.
He also shared his ambitions: “My goal is to win everything every year. I want to work hard and contribute to the team’s success.” Wirtz’s arrival is viewed as a major boost for Liverpool, who see him as a player capable of influencing matches across the attack.
In his previous season with Leverkusen, Wirtz was instrumental in their unbeaten Bundesliga title and German Cup victory, showcasing his talent and potential at the highest level. His signing is regarded as a strategic move to strengthen Liverpool’s squad for future ambitions.
