Everton Eyeing Surprise Move for Manchester City Defender Nathan Ake

Everton are expressing interest in acquiring Nathan Ake from Manchester City, a player capable of functioning at both central and left back positions. Ake, 30, has been an integral part of City’s defense since his transfer from Bournemouth for £41 million in 2020. During his time at City, he has secured ten trophies, including four Premier League titles.

However, Ake’s involvement diminished in the 2024-25 season due to injuries, making only ten league appearances and remaining unused in their recent 4-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers. As the transfer window closes, Everton’s manager, David Moyes, is seeking reinforcements across the squad, with Ake emerging as a potential target.

Everton faces defensive challenges, notably with Jarrad Branthwaite sidelined after an injury in training, and Vitaly Mykolenko missing the latest match. During a recent game, midfielder James Garner was unexpectedly deployed as a left back, underscoring defensive gaps.

Ake’s possible departure from City could be influenced by new signings like Rayan Ait-Nouri and the versatile Josko Gvardiol, who also competes for left-sided roles. City manager Pep Guardiola has indicated a desire to reduce the squad size, citing the challenge of managing a large group of players.

Guardiola highlighted the difficulty of squad management, stating, “We should trim the squad, but it’s not easy because I love all of them.” Ake, a seasoned Netherlands international with 54 caps, has a history at Chelsea and Bournemouth before joining City. As City prepares for matches against Tottenham, Everton looks set to strengthen their defense before the transfer deadline.
