Trump Must Pressure Putin to End Russia’s Wa:r in Ukraine
Efforts to End the Ukraine Conflict Intensify
Recently, a swift diplomatic push was initiated to promote peace in Ukraine, including a quick summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, followed by a meeting with European leaders at the White House. However, Putin has so far delayed making concrete commitments, refusing to agree to meetings with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov dismissed diplomatic efforts, stating that such talks depend on conditions that are unlikely to be met and criticizing Western promises to defend Ukraine without Russian approval.
Despite diplomatic setbacks, the conflict persists on the ground. Over the weekend, Russia killed 14 Ukrainian civilians, and following a Monday meeting between Trump and Zelensky, Russia launched 270 drones and 10 missiles, the highest attack rate of the month. Since then, violence has only increased.
Calls for Ceasefire
Former President Donald Trump has expressed a desire to see the violence end, emphasizing concern for human lives and the toll on children. He stated, “If I can save 7,000 people a week from being killed, I’d consider it a step toward Heaven,” implying that greater diplomatic pressure is necessary to force Putin to the negotiating table.
While Trump advocates for intensified sanctions—such as increased tariffs and targeting Russia’s oil and mineral exports—to pressure Moscow, the question remains: what is being done to pressure Russia directly? Despite the devastating casualties—over one million—the Kremlin leader remains indifferent to the human cost, claiming the sacrifices are necessary.
The key leverage lies in economic sanctions. Since the threat of secondary sanctions by Trump in August, which prompted Putin to accept the Alaska summit, little progress has been made. To accelerate peace efforts, experts suggest increasing sanctions, tariffs, and disrupting Russia’s vital trade in energy and minerals—steps that could hasten Putin’s urgency to seek negotiations and end the ongoing violence.
