Meijer Manager Calls Police on Autistic Deli Worker Over Alleged Theft — Bodycam Footage
Supermarket Chain Faces Backlash After Autistic Teen Arrested for Food Theft
A recent incident involving a supermarket chain has sparked widespread criticism after police bodycam footage revealed the arrest of a 19-year-old autistic employee over alleged food theft. The footage circulating on social media shows James Denison being confronted by police at a Meijer store in Seven Hills, Ohio, on March 7, 2024.
The video depicts a store manager accusing Denison of taking food items, including fruit cups and chicken, over a three-month period valued at approximately $110. The manager claims the theft was ongoing, but Denison stated the items were part of his shift lunches that he forgot to pay for.
The footage shows the store manager confidently accusing Denison, who appears sheepish and compliant, of theft. The manager even points a finger gun at him while making the accusation. Denison was searched, handcuffed, and taken to the police station, despite explaining that he lives nearby and was caught eating a portion of chicken he believed he owed.
The police officer, attempting to calm Denison, expressed a sentiment of helping people rather than strictly enforcing rules. Nonetheless, Denison was booked for minor theft and released without bond.
The incident has led to a social media uproar, with many users calling for a boycott of Meijer. A crowdfunding campaign set up by a Florida nurse has already raised over $28,000 to support Denison’s legal expenses, transportation, and living costs.
Meijer has yet to comment publicly on the incident.
