NYPD Officer Shoots Suspect Dead During Moped Ambush; Accomplice Still at Large
Man Shot and Killed During Moped Ambush in Washington Heights
An off-duty NYPD officer shot and killed a 30-year-old man who pulled a gun during a coordinated attack involving two suspects on mopeds in Washington Heights. The second suspect, who fled on an e-scooter, remains at large, authorities said.
The incident occurred just before 9:45 p.m. outside a residential building near West 173rd Street and Amsterdam Avenue. The officer, standing outside when attacked, was approached by the suspect who asked for a person’s name. The suspect then drew a firearm, prompting the officer to draw his weapon and open fire, Deputy Chief Eric Pagan reported.
In response to the gunfire, the suspect was struck and received emergency medical aid at the scene. He was transported to Harlem Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Officers recovered a loaded 9mm firearm at the scene. The second suspect managed to escape on a moped.
The officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is receiving medical treatment. The incident highlights ongoing violence involving armed suspects in the city, with the NYPD emphasizing the bravery of officers in protecting the public.
