Gal Gadot Explains Hollywood Anti-Israel Sentiment Behind ‘Snow White’ Flop

Gal Gadot Addresses ‘Snow White’ Box Office Performance and External Pressures

Gal Gadot recently explained that her comments about the pressure celebrities face to criticize Israel may have influenced the poor box office results of the live-action Snow White remake. She shared on Instagram Stories that, during the film’s release, she felt personally targeted by critics who opposed Israel, viewing her primarily as an Israeli rather than just an actress.

“When the film came out, I experienced very personal criticism rooted in political views,” she wrote. “They saw me as first and foremost an Israeli, not as an actress—that’s the perspective I responded from when asked about the movie.”

Gadot, 40, expressed disappointment over the film’s underperformance, which grossed approximately $205.6 million globally against a budget estimated between $240 and $270 million. She attributed part of the film’s lack of success to external factors, including the aftermath of the October 7 attack by Hamas terrorists on Israel, which led to increased pressure on celebrities to voice anti-Israel sentiments. “I always try to explain and provide context about the situation here, but ultimately, people make their own choices,” she stated.

The actress also voiced her belief that the film’s failure was not solely due to external pressures but involved multiple factors. She recalled her initial confidence in the film’s potential, which was shaken after the attacks. “I was sure this movie would be a huge hit. And then, everything changed,” she said.

In addition to her political stance, Gadot, who is Jewish, has faced criticism for her outspoken support of Israel on social media, leading to some backlash including death threats, which prompted increased security measures. She also faced controversy when her co-star Rachel Zegler criticized the film’s plot and shared political opinions, including misgivings about the story’s depiction of the prince.

Gadot emphasized that while she advocates for her homeland, she respects individual choices and recognizes the complex factors influencing a film’s success or failure. Her comments come amid ongoing discussions about the intersection of politics and entertainment.
