Trump-Putin Summit: A Win for Russia
Trump Fails to Secure Ceasefire in Summit with Putin
During his campaign, Donald Trump repeatedly promised to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict within 24 hours of taking office. However, after an eight-month tenure, he concluded a summit with President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage without reaching any agreement.
On the day of the meeting, Trump emphasized his desire for a rapid ceasefire, stating, “I want to see a ceasefire quickly. I don’t know if it will happen today, but I won’t be happy if it doesn’t.” Meanwhile, Putin has resisted calls for a pause in fighting, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders have underscored the need to halt hostilities to pave the way for peace negotiations. Prior to the summit, Trump warned of “very severe consequences” should Putin refuse a ceasefire.
Following the talks, Trump contradicted his initial goal on Truth Social, asserting that a peace agreement, not just a ceasefire, was the appropriate resolution: “The best way to end the war is through a comprehensive Peace Agreement, which would bring a lasting end, rather than a temporary ceasefire that often fails.”
Without a demand for a ceasefire, Russia remains free to continue fighting in Ukraine without concern over US sanctions. Moscow’s officials celebrated the summit as a victory, suggesting that Russia’s military campaign could persist unimpeded.
In a subsequent interview with Sean Hannity, Trump expressed admiration for Putin, remarking, “I always had a great relationship with President Putin, and we could have achieved great things together.” He also criticized what he called the “Russia Russia Russia hoax,” which he claims has hindered potential collaboration.
While Trump claims he wishes the violence in Ukraine would end, analysts suggest he might have personal motives, as one observer noted, “It became clear that Trump’s interest in ending the war stemmed more from a desire to work with Putin than from concern for Ukrainian suffering.”
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet Trump in Washington on Monday, emphasizing the urgent need for fighting to cease both on the battlefield and in the air.
