Wayne Rooney Predicts a Successful Season for Manchester United and Names Liverpool as His Title Favourite
Former Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney has shared his predictions for the upcoming Premier League season, expressing confidence in the Red Devils’ prospects. Rooney, now 39, will be more involved in Premier League coverage this season, having signed a lucrative deal to appear regularly on Match of the Day.
Looking ahead to the opening fixtures, Rooney has chosen Liverpool as his champion, with Arsenal, Manchester City, and Chelsea making up his top four. Interestingly, he predicts Manchester United will finish fifth despite their challenging recent campaign, which saw Ruben Amorim’s side end 15th after a last-place finish with 18 losses in 38 matches.
United has strengthened their squad with signings like Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko, and are coming off an unbeaten pre-season. Rooney believes the team is heading in the right direction, stating, “I think they still need one or two more signings but I see what Amorim is doing. It’s looking better for Manchester United, and I think they will make it into the top five.”
Although a fan of United’s rivals, Rooney expects Liverpool to win the league and forecasts Mohamed Salah to secure his fifth Golden Boot. He also highlighted Liverpool’s new signing Jeremie Frimpong, a full-back from Bayer Leverkusen, as the most crucial summer addition. Frimpong, who joined for £35 million, is tasked with filling the void left by Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Rooney expressed excitement about Liverpool’s young talent, including 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha, who recently moved from Chelsea and has been named on the bench for Liverpool’s matches, though he has only played once for the senior team.
Lastly, Rooney predicted Leeds United will outperform other promoted teams — Burnley and Sunderland — after their significant summer additions. Overall, Rooney’s insights offer a confident outlook for Manchester United and an optimistic view of Liverpool’s title chances this season.
