Aston Villa blocked from spending Ramsey’s £40m transfer fee by UEFA rules

Aston Villa Faces Financial Constraints as Transfer Restrictions Limit Spending

Aston Villa is encountering significant financial limitations, preventing the club from increasing their summer transfer budget, even if they agree to sell midfielder Jacob Ramsey to Newcastle for approximately £40 million. Despite nearing a deal with Newcastle, Villa’s ability to reinvest in new players remains restricted due to UEFA’s financial regulations.

Villa’s potential sale of Ramsey is unlikely to substantially enhance their financial flexibility before the transfer window closes on September 1. The club was fined £9.5 million in July for breaching UEFA’s rules, which limit European clubs to spending no more than 70% of their revenues on player-related costs starting from 2025. UEFA identified Villa’s squad costs as being between 80% and 90%, exceeding the cap.

While further player departures could potentially improve their financial position, Villa has indicated it will not sell key players such as Morgan Rogers or captain John McGinn. Rogers has attracted interest from Chelsea, but the club plans to offer him a new contract soon. Similarly, McGinn is expected to receive improved terms.

The Villa star is on the verge of moving to Newcastle in a £40million move

Jacob Ramsey is close to transferring to Newcastle in a deal worth around £40 million.

The club’s main focus this transfer window has been securing new contracts for their pivotal players, with Boubacar Kamara and Lucas Digne having re-signed earlier this summer. Discussions are also ongoing with Youri Tielemans, Matty Cash, and Pau Torres.

Meanwhile, there is growing optimism that Morgan Rogers will recover in time for Saturday’s Premier League opener against Newcastle. The forward, a rising star from last season, suffered an ankle injury in a friendly against Roma but has been participating in training and is expected to be ready for the match at Villa Park.
