Legendary Manager Praises Liverpool’s £35M Deal for Italy’s Future Defender Giovanni Leoni
Legendary Coach Praises Liverpool’s Interest in Young Italian Defender Giovanni Leoni
Arrigo Sacchi, an iconic figure in Italian football management, has expressed strong support for Liverpool’s pursuit of Parma’s promising teenage defender, Giovanni Leoni. Sacchi believes the 18-year-old has the potential to become a key player for Italy’s national team in the future.
Recent reports indicate that Liverpool, the reigning Premier League champions, are making serious efforts to sign Leoni, with a transfer fee expected to be around £35 million. This move coincides with the Reds’ ongoing search for a long-term successor to their veteran captain Virgil van Dijk.
Leoni, standing at 6ft 5in, has only made 17 appearances in Serie A since joining Parma last summer from Sampdoria, having previously been loaned from Padova. Despite limited first-team exposure, critics like Sacchi emphasize his talent and maturity, asserting that his potential far surpasses his current experience.
Sacchi dismissed concerns over Leoni’s limited game time, highlighting that even with fewer appearances, the defender has demonstrated the qualities of a future star. “Talent knows no age,” Sacchi states, adding that Leoni’s performances suggest he could anchor Italy’s defense for years to come.
The former Milan coach praised Liverpool’s interest, calling it a “great move,” and lamented the lack of competition from Italian giants such as AC Milan, Inter, Juventus, and Napoli. Leoni’s recent transfer from Sampdoria to Parma was initially valued at £4.3 million, but his market value has since surged to £35 million.
Leoni’s potential was also recognized by former Italy international Andrea Pirlo, who managed him at Sampdoria. Pirlo expressed confidence in the young defender, stating, “He played as a mature youngster and will develop into a formidable footballer.”
