DC Mayor Muriel Bowser Condemns Trump’s National Guard Deployment as ‘Authoritarian Push’
DC Mayor Reverses Stance on Federal Crime Response
Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser, a Democrat, has shifted her position regarding the deployment of the National Guard in the district. Initially, she welcomed the federal troops to assist with crime reduction, expressing a willingness to cooperate with the federal government. However, she recently emphasized the importance of residents actively protecting their city and maintaining local autonomy.
This change came shortly after she appeared to support President Trump’s decision to send additional federal law enforcement to combat rising violence. At a town hall, Bowser urged residents to work together to safeguard their neighborhoods and preserve District sovereignty, particularly in opposition to what she termed an “authoritarian push.”
Under Trump’s directive, multiple federal agencies—including the FBI, DEA, Border Patrol, and U.S. Park Police—are supplementing the local police force. While Bowser initially supported the federal help, she now indicates that most of the federal officers’ patrols would be confined to federal properties like parks and monuments.
As of Tuesday, only a small portion of the approximately 800 National Guard members expected to participate have been activated; more are anticipated in the coming days. The deployment follows President Trump’s decision to federalize the 3,400-officer Metropolitan Police Department and activate the National Guard to address violence in the city.
Crime statistics reveal D.C. had the fourth-highest homicide rate among U.S. cities in 2024, with 27.3 murders per 100,000 residents—significantly higher than New York City and Los Angeles.
