Ex-Palace defender and coach jailed 14 years for £2.36M crystal meth haul
Ex-Crystal Palace Player Sentenced to 14 Years for Large-Scale Drug Trafficking
An ex-professional footballer with a history at Crystal Palace has been sentenced to 14 years in prison after police uncovered over £2.36 million worth of crystal meth in his possession. The arrest was made on Valentine’s Day last year when officers discovered 19.7kg of the Class A drug hidden in a sports bag at his Croydon flat, where he lived with his partner and their infant son.
The operation marked one of the largest crystal meth seizures in the UK. Court proceedings revealed that the 34-year-old, who previously worked as a personal trainer with clients including England international Jadon Sancho, had been involved in the supply of multiple drugs, including cocaine and MDMA. In September, he admitted intent to supply these substances at Croydon Crown Court.
During the sentencing, the court highlighted his role within an organized crime group. The judge described his participation as significant and not merely peripheral. Evidence showed Boateng held a position of trust, responsible for managing vast quantities of drugs. Although he claimed he was coerced due to threats against his life, he acknowledged involvement in the drug trade, attempting to fund his own substance habits.
Police also found additional drugs during a search of his flat, including cocaine, MDMA tablets, and ketamine, with a street value up to several thousand pounds. CCTV footage indicated Boateng had previously dumped a large quantity of crystal meth outside his home, supporting allegations of his central role in the trafficking network.
He was initially granted bail but was re-arrested in February this year at his new address, where another substantial amount of crystal meth was recovered. The seized drugs had an estimated street value ranging from over one million to more than two million pounds.
While acknowledging the gravity of his offenses, some legal arguments suggested he might have been under duress from criminal organizations. Nonetheless, the judge emphasized the seriousness of his participation in high-volume drug dealing, reflecting the extent of his involvement with the drug trade.
Boateng’s football career included spells at Bristol Rovers, Bromley, Sutton United, and Newport County, but he faced bans and legal issues related to match-fixing and drug offenses. He also appeared on a prison-focused podcast, where he expressed a desire to avoid reoffending.
