Andy Cohen Slams Martina Navratilova Over Surrogacy Comments
Andy Cohen Criticizes Martina Navratilova Over Surrogacy Comments
Andy Cohen strongly denounced Martina Navratilova’s recent assertion that “surrogacy is wrong,” calling her statement both uninformed and foolish. The television host, who has two children born via surrogacy, addressed Navratilova’s controversial remarks during a recent episode of SiriusXM’s “Andy Cohen Live.”
Navratilova’s original post, since deleted, claimed that surrogacy is morally wrong and suggested that having children through surrogacy means “you can’t have it all.” Cohen dismissed her comments, emphasizing that her perspective is based on misconceptions. He stated, “What Martina tweeted was, ‘Surrogacy is wrong.’ Well, that’s just ill-informed and dumb.” He further noted that he plans to discuss this at upcoming reunion shows.
Cohen mentioned he had previously discussed Navratilova’s comment with her wife, Julia Lemigova, on “Watch What Happens Live.” Lemigova, who defended her wife saying the comment was “out of context,” clarified her own stance, asserting her support for surrogacy. “Martina and I share a bed, but not the same opinions,” Lemigova said, reiterating her disagreement with Navratilova.
He explained that surrogacy is a cause close to his heart, as he welcomed both his children through gestational surrogacy—a process where the surrogate does not provide her own egg. Cohen’s daughter Lucy, born in April 2022, was among the first babies born via gestational surrogacy after it was legalized in New York.
Despite Cohen’s openness about sharing the same egg donor for his children, the identity remains private. He also revealed that his son Benjamin was born before surrogacy was legal in New York, and Cohen played a role in helping to legalize it in the state.
