A campus leader advocating for Palestinian causes faced significant criticism after attempting to justify the Hamas terror attacks of October 7, 2023, which resulted in over 1,200 Israeli deaths and 251 hostages taken in Gaza. Rep. Elise Stefanik called for his immediate deportation, citing his role in inciting anti-Israel protests at Columbia University, including protests that led to the occupation of university buildings and harassment of Jewish students. Born in a Syrian refugee camp before becoming a U.S. permanent resident, Khalil was released from federal custody in June after legal proceedings. His supporters argue that his statements have been taken out of context, insisting his opposition is to violence and civilian casualties, grounded in international human rights law.

Critics, including GOP lawmakers, contend Khalil’s remarks display moral depravity and support for terrorist acts. Legal challenges against his deportation continue, with courts denying attempts by the government to re-incarcerate him or to proceed with deportation based on his protected free speech rights.
