US Embassy Staffer Indicted for Smuggling Cocaine in Duty-Free Items into New York
US Embassy Staffer Accused of Cocaine Smuggling into New York
A staff member at the US embassy in the Dominican Republic has been charged with drug trafficking, specifically smuggling cocaine into New York through duty-free items such as whiskey bottles, cigarette cartons, and snack boxes. The suspect, Jairo Eliezer Arias Caceres, 35, was extradited to New York to face allegations of conspiracy to import cocaine, according to federal prosecutors.
While working as a security officer at the embassy’s Santo Domingo location for seven years, Arias Caceres allegedly orchestrated a months-long scheme from April to December 2023. The scheme involved hiding blocks of cocaine inside duty-free purchases at the Santo Domingo Airport, which were then carried onto flights to the US. Photos depict bricks of illegal narcotics concealed in boxes of Johnny Walker whiskey, Marlboro cigarettes, and chocolate containers.
Prosecutors said Arias Caceres collaborated with former coworkers who supplied the drug bricks, arranging and financing the shipments. He used couriers to sneak the drugs through airport security, with the cocaine being secreted in duty-free items bought before departures. Some of the captured images show confiscated cigarettes and whiskey bottles packed with illicit drugs.
The accused, who previously served as an airport security guard before joining the embassy, faces serious charges that could lead to life imprisonment if convicted. Authorities emphasized that the investigation dismantled a sophisticated drug trafficking network responsible for moving dangerous substances from the Dominican Republic into the US.
Officials underscore the commitment to disrupting transnational criminal organizations involved in drug smuggling to protect communities across the country.
