Mahmoud Khalil Calls October 7 At:ta:ck a Desperate Palestinian Move to Break the Cycle
Anti-Israel Activist Explains Palestinian Perspective on Hamas Attack
Mahmoud Khalil, a former student at Columbia University, described the October 7, 2023, Hamas terror attack on Israel as a desperate act driven by the Palestinians’ need to be heard. He suggested that the attack was a culmination of years of neglect and marginalization, especially as Israel’s government prioritized deals like the Abraham Accords without addressing Palestinian concerns.
“It felt frightening that such a moment had to occur in the Palestinian struggle,” Khalil said, recalling his thoughts during the attack that resulted in over 1,000 Israeli casualties. He emphasized that tensions in the region had been escalating, with Israeli forces killing hundreds of Palestinians—including many children—just days before.
When asked if the attack was something Hamas intended to provoke a war or simply a necessary act to break the current stalemate, Khalil expressed the latter view. He explained that Hamas aimed to break the cycle of silence and marginalization, giving Palestinians a voice on the international stage. “It was a desperate move to tell the world that Palestinians are here and part of the conversation,” he said.
Khalil refused to label the attack as a “mistake,” though he acknowledged that targeting civilians is wrong. He argued that Palestinians should not be viewed solely as victims and stressed the importance of contextualizing their actions within the broader struggles they face.
Previously detained for over three months for participating in anti-Israel protests, Khalil is currently suing the federal government for $20 million, claiming his detention was unjust. The Trump administration accused him of activities “aligned with Hamas,” a claim Khalil disputes.
