Homeless LA Man Vows to Rebuild Viral Treehouse After City Torn It Down

Homeless Man’s Treehouse Dismantled After Going Viral

A homeless man, who constructed a three-story treehouse near an encampment in South Central Los Angeles, saw his elaborate shelter taken down by authorities after gaining widespread attention.

The luxurious hideaway, which drew tens of thousands of likes on TikTok, was demolished about a week ago. Built from scavenged materials, the house featured multiple levels, a zipline for quick exits, and was popular among social media viewers.

The builder, Erick, 34, expressed that he anticipated the removal but remains undeterred. He has already started constructing Tree Mansion 2.0, with features like a trampoline net, a fire pole, and camouflaged walls to blend into the surroundings. Erick explained, “I like building them because I was bored. It’s just what works for me.”

Despite the demolition, Erick continues to live in a ground-level canvas hut and plans to expand his new project. He said he prefers treehouses because they protect him from violence, theft, and unsafe conditions of city shelters, which he finds squalid and dangerous.

Supporters like local resident Maria Alvarado understand Erick’s presence, noting he doesn’t bother anyone and is respectful. Conversely, some business owners complain about harassment and theft associated with encampments, citing Erick as part of the ongoing issues.

Erick emphasized he has no interest in leaving the streets, preferring his treetop homes over what he described as unsafe city shelters. He recounted that he built the new treehouse simply because he enjoys the process, likening himself to Tarzan returning to his roots.

City officials continue to clear homeless camps amid political debates. Despite some claims that homelessness has decreased, a recent survey indicates public concern remains high about ongoing struggles.
