Adams Slams Mamdani for Missing NYPD Funerals Before Mayoral Bid
Major Criticism of Zohran Mamdani for Lack of Police Support
Mayor Eric Adams has criticized mayoral hopeful Zohran Mamdani for his past neglect of NYPD officers, highlighting that Mamdani avoided attending police funerals during his time as a state legislator — only now appearing at such events amid his campaign for City Hall.
Adams remarked, “You should support officers even when you’re not running for mayor. He had opportunities as an assemblyman to honor fallen officers but chose not to; he didn’t lift them up over the years.”
Minimal Engagement with Police Losses
Despite expressing condolences last week at the funeral of NYPD officer Didarul Islam, who was fatally shot in a mass shooting, records show Mamdani was absent from six police officer funerals during his tenure in Albany, offering no public statements or support. These officers—Jonathan Diller, Troy D. Patterson, Lawrence Bromm, Wilbert Mora, Jason Rivera, and crossing guard Krystyna Naprawa—were honored in funerals attended by thousands, yet Mamdani remained silent or absent.
Criticism of Lack of Public Support
Adams questioned Mamdani’s silence following the deaths of officers Mora and Rivera in 2022, noting, “Not once did Mamdani comment or express support for the officers shot or killed. There’s no record of a tweet or statement from him in response to these tragedies.”
As the election approaches, the mayor emphasized the importance of consistent support for law enforcement, contrasting Mamdani’s apparent inattention to fallen officers with his own ongoing advocacy. Mamdani’s team has yet to respond to this criticism.
