Tom Brady Faces Backlash Over ‘Zero Class’ Comment on Wayne Rooney’s Work Ethic
Tom Brady Faces Criticism OverQuestioning Wayne Rooney’s Work Ethic
Legendary NFL player Tom Brady has come under fire for what many perceive as a display of poor sportsmanship after he was seen questioning Wayne Rooney’s dedication during a Birmingham documentary.
The five-part series, Built in Birmingham: Brady and the Blues, offers an inside look at Birmingham City Football Club, capturing moments from players, staff, and investors, including Brady himself. A clip from the show quickly went viral, featuring Brady expressing doubts about Rooney’s commitment during his brief tenure at the club.
Rooney was dismissed in January last year after only 15 matches at the helm, with the team ultimately relegated. The documentary shows Brady visiting the team’s training ground and observing Rooney’s team meeting, before commenting as he departs, “I’m a little worried about our head coach’s work ethic.” His business manager responds, “Comes across as lackadaisical.”
This remark sparked backlash among football fans. Some criticized Brady’s comments as lacking class, with one noting, “To say that about the Tom Brady of English football is crazy,” while others called for more respect towards Rooney.
Rooney transitioned directly to management after retiring from playing, taking charge of Derby County in the Championship and later briefly managing DC United in MLS. His managerial efforts earned praise given the challenging circumstances at Derby, where he faced financial issues, although his stint in the United States was less successful and short-lived.
Brady’s involvement with Birmingham, backed by investor Knighthead Capital, included hiring Rooney, a decision later admitted by Brady in the documentary to have been a mistake. He revealed that early warnings against making significant changes were ignored, leading to poor results and relegation. Brady described the team’s performance as disappointing, criticizing players for showing laziness and entitlement.
Following his tenure at Birmingham, Rooney took charge of Plymouth Argyle but struggled to secure victories, finishing last season with only five wins. He later commented on his brief managerial spells, recognizing that limited time hindered meaningful progress, stating, “Time is the most precious commodity a manager requires.”
