Eliotte Heinz Family Releases Heartbreaking Statement
Missing Wisconsin Student Found Deceased in Mississippi River
The family of Eliotte Heinz, a graduate student from Wisconsin, is mourning after her body was discovered in the Mississippi River, closing a four-day search effort. Heinz went missing early Sunday morning after leaving a bar in downtown La Crosse, where she had been socializing with friends.
Security footage captured her walking near the river around 3 a.m., but she never returned home. Her relatives reported her missing after she became unaccounted for, prompting police and community volunteers to conduct a widespread search. Her body was finally recovered about 10 miles downstream on Wednesday.
Heinz, who was studying mental health counseling at Viterbo University, had been at the Bronco Bar with friends before leaving early Sunday morning. Her family noted she left at around 2:30 a.m., and she was last seen on video walking toward the river. The community’s efforts to find her included extensive searches along the river.
Authorities stated that the investigation remains open as they await the results of an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Her family expressed their profound grief, describing her as a caring, intelligent, and funny individual who was deeply loved. They shared their heartbreak, saying, “We will forever have a missing piece since she is no longer with us.”
The university, deeply affected by her loss, plans to hold a memorial service when students return for the fall semester. School officials and local authorities extended their sympathies, emphasizing the tragic loss of a young woman with her whole life ahead of her.
