Mexican Soldiers Cross Border into New Mexico Accidentally

Over a dozen heavily armed Mexican soldiers inadvertently crossed into the U.S. in New Mexico while conducting operations against drug traffickers and gunrunners. Instead of targeting criminals, they unexpectedly surrounded two American volunteers who were exploring the desert to assist lost migrants.

Abbey Carpenter and James Holeman, volunteers with the humanitarian organization Battalion Search and Rescue, discovered the confused soldiers during their patrol. The soldiers, unaware they had crossed the border, asked the volunteers about their activities in Mexico. Carpenter used her GPS to verify they were on U.S. soil, which initially caused her concern about documenting the incident.

The soldiers claimed they were searching for traffickers, and Carpenter noted their curiosity about what the volunteers were doing. Carpenter recorded the encounter, including footage of the armed personnel in a white pickup truck marked with “Guardia Nacional” and military badges featuring the Mexican flag. The soldiers quickly realized their mistake and retreated southward back across the border.

During the incident, Holeman asked the soldiers to take a picture with him, but he admitted feeling reassured by knowing he was on U.S. soil. The desert border area lacks clear demarcation, marked only by a fragile wire fence that’s easily accessible, which contributed to the confusion.

Earlier during their patrol, the volunteers also spotted two vehicles with Mexican plates bearing bullet holes near the border, highlighting ongoing tensions and dangers in the region. While the presence of Mexican military close to the border isn’t unusual, such cross-border incidents remain rare and concerning.

In recent years, plans have been made to bolster border security, including a deal where Mexican officials agreed to deploy 10,000 National Guard troops to combat illegal crossings and trafficking. This incident underscores the tense and complex border situation in the region.
