Liam Payne Jokes About One Direction’s Dance Routine During Unreleased TV Taping

Liam Payne Nicknames One Direction as Great Dancers in ‘Building the Band’

Netflix' 'Building the Band' is Liam Payne's final project: What to expect from the new series

Liam Payne, former member of One Direction, humorously praised his bandmates’ dancing skills during his recent appearance as a guest judge on the reality show Building the Band. During the episode, after observing a performance by the new group Midnight ‘Til Morning singing “Iris,” he playfully criticized their choreography.

He remarked, “We’re in a power ballad. We’re looking for air grabs. Boy band central, baby,” and commented that Shane Appell’s backflip seemed slightly out of place. When the contestants explained their focus on instrumental performance rather than dance, Payne quipped that One Direction was known more for their stage presence than complex choreography, contrasting their style with the more dance-focused acts of earlier boy bands like the Backstreet Boys.

Kelly Rowland, Liam Payne and Nicole Scherzinger are seen in the Season 1 finale of Netflix's 'Building The Band.'

He confidently demonstrated his point by standing and swaying his hips, joking, “We’re amazing dancers, obviously, in One Direction. It’s what we’re known for,” and referencing George Michael’s ability to command an arena with minimal movement.

Alongside Kelly Rowland from Destiny’s Child and Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls, Payne watched six new groups perform live, offering feedback focused on improving stage presence and chemistry. He encouraged contestants to claim their moment on stage and create memorable interactions, emphasizing the importance of engaging with the audience and expressing confidence.

Payne’s appearance on the show was filmed in September 2024, just weeks before his tragic death on October 16, after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires. As part of One Direction, he achieved record-breaking sales and chart success and was remembered for his passion for music and dedication to mentoring others.

In a message opening the series, fellow judge AJ McLean honored Payne’s spirit and passion, dedicating the show to his memory and family.
