Zohran Mamdani’s Critique Resurfaces as House Dem Leader ConsidersBacking Socialist NYC Mayoral Candidate

NYC Mayoral Candidate Zohran Mamdani and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries Clash Over Past Remarks

Zohran Mamdani, a progressive candidate in New York City’s mayoral race, has previously made controversial statements about Hakeem Jeffries, the House Minority Leader. Mamdani accused Jeffries of demonstrating implicit Islamophobia, referencing old comments in which Jeffries discussed religious differences during a 2000 debate. Mamdani also criticized Jeffries for his strong support of Israel, comparing his stance to that of segregationist George Wallace, notably in the wake of the 2014 Gaza conflict, which Mamdani highlighted on social media.

Mamdani has been an outspoken critic of Israel’s policies, especially amid heightened tensions following the October 2023 Hamas attack. He publicly criticized Jeffries for not calling for a ceasefire, questioning how many Palestinians needed to be killed before such a call was made. Mamdani’s activism has included protesting near Schumer’s home and publicly questioning the House leader’s support for Israel, which has strained their political relationship.

Since Mamdani’s primary victory, Jeffries has opted for diplomatic silence rather than direct criticism, though he has acknowledged past disagreements. Jeffries, who supports Israel publicly, has agreed to meet with Mamdani after the latter’s upcoming trip to Uganda. Both leaders plan to reconvene with community members in Brooklyn to discuss local issues.

Mamdani has accused the Democratic Party’s radical wing of dominating the agenda with a platform he describes as extremist. Despite the tension, both leaders maintain plans to meet again after Mamdani’s return from Uganda, with Jeffries stating, “We agreed to reconvene with other members of the delegation and community leaders in Brooklyn.”
