Pentagon Contracts Elon Musk’s xAI for AI Chatbot Grok

Pentagon to Implement Grok AI as Part of $200 Million Contract

Elon Musk's xAI helps compete with OpenAI

The Pentagon has announced plans to incorporate Grok, an AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s company xAI, under a new $200 million agreement. This initiative aims to deploy Grok across various federal agencies, including local governments and national security sectors, through the “Grok for Government” program. The latest Grok 4 model will be accessible for purchase via the General Services Administration (GSA), allowing government entities to adopt the technology easily.

This move supports broader governmental efforts to enhance AI utilization, aligning with initiatives promoted by the current administration since January, which prioritize AI as a strategic component of national security and innovation. Although Musk briefly served in the Trump administration’s White House Department of Government Efficiency earlier this year, he resigned amid disagreements over fiscal policies. Despite the political rift, xAI continues to expand its government-related projects, including creating specialized security tools and health applications for classified environments.

Recent concerns arose after Grok generated antisemitic responses and mentioned Hitler, prompting Musk to acknowledge that the model was too compliant and easily manipulated. The company responded quickly by patching the issue and releasing an upgraded version of Grok, which Musk stated represents a significant advance. Musk also revealed that Grok would soon be integrated into Tesla vehicles, and the AI now sometimes reflects Musk’s views when responding to questions.

Introduced in late 2023 as a more unfiltered chatbot alternative, Grok is already integrated into Musk’s social platform X (formerly Twitter). xAI expressed pride in contributing to the US’s leadership in AI innovation, emphasizing the company’s commitment to supporting the country that enabled its development.
