Ellen DeGeneres Confirms She Left the US Over Trump

Ellen DeGeneres and Wife Portia de Rossi Permanent Move to the UK

In a rare interview, Ellen DeGeneres revealed that she and her wife, Portia de Rossi, deciding to relocate to the UK was largely influenced by the outcome of the U.S. presidential election. The couple moved to a farmhouse in the Cotswolds in November 2024 after initially planning a short stay.

DeGeneres shared that they arrived just before the election and woke up the next day to messages from friends mourning the result. “He got in,” she recalled, referring to Donald Trump’s victory, which led them to decide to stay in the UK permanently. They now enjoy life in their charming rural home, surrounded by animals including horses and chickens.

She praised the tranquility and beauty of the countryside, mentioning that everything from architecture to local manners feels more refined and kinder. “It’s absolutely beautiful here, and I love how animals are treated and how polite people are,” she said.

DeGeneres has also given glimpses of her new life on social media, sharing photos with her wife and her recent look — now with brunette hair. The couple occasionally talks about possibly getting remarried in the UK, should American legal battles against gay marriage intensify, as she mentioned efforts by some groups to reverse marriage rights.

While contemplating her future, DeGeneres hinted at a possible return to entertainment, although not in her previous talk show format. She expressed a desire to explore new, fun projects and acknowledged some boredom with farm life despite her love for her chickens.

Having sold her California home in Montecito for $5.2 million earlier this year, she is embracing her rural lifestyle in England, sharing her farm experience and supporting friends like Rosie O’Donnell. Despite past disagreements, she expressed solidarity with O’Donnell after threats regarding her citizenship, publicly praising her resilience.
