Trump urges NFL’s Washington Commanders to restore Redskins name
President Calls for Reversion of Team Names to Native American Heritage
On Sunday, the former president publicly urged the NFL’s Washington team to restore their original name, advocating for a return to “Redskins,” and mockingly referring to them as the “Washington Whatever’s.” He also suggested that the Cleveland baseball team should revert from the Guardians back to the Indians, emphasizing that both teams had previously rebranded due to concerns over offensive stereotypes.
Trump claimed that sentiments among Native American communities are shifting back in favor of the original names, arguing that the cultural pendulum has swung away from political correctness. He emphasized the heritage and pride associated with these historic team names.
“The Washington ‘Whatever’s’ should IMMEDIATELY change their name back to the Washington Redskins Football Team. There is a strong public demand for this,” he posted on social media. Regarding the Cleveland team, he added, “Our great Indian people, with large numbers, want this to happen. Their heritage is being systematically taken away. Times are different now.”
He called on team owners to “GET IT DONE,” pointing out that both teams have recently changed their names—Washington in 2022 after years as the Washington Football Team, and Cleveland in late 2020 following the removal of the controversial “Chief Wahoo” logo.
Trump linked the name changes to the wave of racial unrest following George Floyd’s death, noting the rebranding of Cleveland from Indians to Guardians as a response to societal demands. The former owner of the Washington team, Dan Snyder, sold the franchise in 2023 to Josh Harris, who remains supportive of the new team name.
Harris described the team identity as having developed a compelling character, associating the ‘Commanders’ name with strength and resilience.
Trump has been outspoken about his views on sports teams’ names and has frequently attended major sporting events during his presidency, including the Super Bowl and UFC bouts. Recently, he announced plans to host a UFC fight at the White House, reflecting his ongoing engagement with the sports world.
