Zohran Mamdani Questions Prison Purpose—Raises Alarm Bells
Mayoral Candidate’s Past Remarks on Jails Spark Backlash
The leading Democratic hopeful for mayor, Zohran Mamdani, drew criticism after a resurfaced interview in which he questioned the purpose of prisons and jails. During a 2020 interview, Mamdani asked, “What purpose do they serve?” when queried about their obsolescence, and expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of incarceration.
He remarked that many defenders of the prison system might not reflect its harsh realities, suggesting that many inmates do not come out better than when they entered and implying that prisons serve to maintain societal illusions. Mamdani also criticized the societal rules that uphold the criminal justice system, suggesting that it benefits the wealthy by portraying prisoners as the problem.
The clip, circulated widely on social media, primarily in conservative circles, prompted strong reactions from law enforcement officials and community members. Critics argued that Mamdani’s views are disconnected from the realities faced by communities impacted by crime.
Law enforcement representatives expressed concern that Mamdani’s stance could threaten public safety if implemented as policy. Benny Boscio, president of the Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association, warned that moving towards decarceration could increase dangers in neighborhoods already affected by violence.
Throughout his campaign, Mamdani has criticized the current prison system, linking it to systemic racism and advocating for reducing jail populations, including closing Rikers Island. He supports alternative justice approaches, such as diverting defendants and pre-trial releases.
Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa condemned Mamdani’s past comments as “preposterous,” emphasizing the need for jails to keep dangerous individuals off the streets. Many New Yorkers, while recognizing the importance of prisons, also agree that conditions can be improved to ensure safety and better rehabilitation.
