Roma Nears Loan Agreement with Brighton for Evan Ferguson, Including Option to Buy for £32.9 Million

Roma are close to finalizing a loan deal with Brighton for Evan Ferguson, with a potential permanent transfer set at £32.9 million. The 20-year-old Irish striker, who previously played for West Ham on loan, has struggled with injuries during his time at Brighton, limiting his appearances.

Ferguson rose to prominence after an impressive start to his career, including a hat-trick against Newcastle early in the 2023-24 season. His promising progress was hindered by injuries, including a six-month ankle injury, which affected his development.

The Serie A club has been in negotiations with Brighton for several weeks, attempting to agree on a transfer fee. Initial offers from Roma ranged from €30 million (£26 million), while Brighton had valued Ferguson closer to €40 million (€34.6 million). The final fee is believed to be settled at £32.9 million (€38 million), including additional payments.

Roma are now focusing on finalizing contract terms with Ferguson, which are expected to be straightforward. The move would see Ferguson join a club eager to bolster their attacking options, following Brighton’s recent sale of João Pedro to Chelsea for £60 million. Ferguson’s departure would mark another significant transfer for Brighton, alongside interest in their left-back Pervis Estupiñán, who could also be on the move for around £40 million.

Ferguson, once considered a bright prospect comparable to top scorers like Alan Shearer, has shown flashes of potential but has yet to fully establish himself due to injuries. His move to Serie A would offer him a fresh start and new opportunities abroad.
