Man Arrested for Fatal Shooting of Wife in Queens
A 62-year-old man has been taken into custody following an incident in which he allegedly shot and killed his wife in broad daylight in Queens last month. The victim, 45-year-old Chaneil Ramsay, was shot during an attack on 127th Avenue near 176th Street in South Jamaica.
According to police reports, Audwin Caines, who is believed to be homeless, fired multiple shots at Ramsay around 2:30 p.m. on June 23. She was found face down on the sidewalk, unconscious and unresponsive, with a gunshot wound to her head. Paramedics transported her to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
Following the shooting, Caines fled the scene. His 21-year-old stepdaughter contacted authorities, leading to a search for him. After more than three weeks evading capture, Caines was apprehended Tuesday afternoon by the NYPD Regional Fugitive Task Force.
He has been charged with murder, criminal possession of a weapon, and reckless endangerment. The investigation into his motives is ongoing, and his arraignment was scheduled for Wednesday in Queens Criminal Court.
