Arsenal Make Surprise Bid for Bayern Star Ahead of Club World Cup Amid £200m Summer Spend

Arsenal’s Summer Transfer Pursuit of Joao Palhinha

Arsenal reportedly made an attempt to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Joao Palhinha earlier this summer. The club was keen on strengthening its defensive midfield option, viewing Palhinha as a reliable choice given his strong performances in the Premier League during his two seasons with Fulham.

Palhinha transferred from Sporting Lisbon for approximately £17 million in 2022 before moving to Bayern Munich for £48 million last year. Despite winning the Bundesliga in his debut season, his individual campaign was underwhelming; he started only seven league matches and was sidelined with injuries for over two months, failing to contribute a goal or an assist in 17 Bundesliga appearances.

Bayern Munich had considered selling him earlier this year, with Arsenal reportedly engaged in serious negotiations over a transfer fee, with Bayern willing to accept roughly £26 million. However, no deal materialized as the clubs couldn’t agree on terms, and Bayern’s midfield options remain plentiful, with competitors like Leon Goretzka and Konrad Laimer vying for starting spots.

Interest from other top clubs in Italy, Spain, Turkey, and Portugal persists, but Palhinha remains focused on making his mark at Bayern, only willing to consider an exceptional offer such as an Arsenal move. Fulham also expressed interest in re-signing him after his underwhelming first season at Bayern, where he scored eight goals in 79 appearances.
