Juan Mata’s Family Urged Him to Leave Man United After Mourinho’s Appointment
Juan Mata Shares Family’s Concerns Over Mourinho’s Appointment at Manchester United
Juan Mata has revealed that his family, particularly his grandfather, advised him to leave Manchester United when José Mourinho was appointed as manager. Mata, who joined United from Chelsea in 2014 for a then-record fee, faced a complex relationship with Mourinho, having previously been sidelined at Chelsea under his management.
During a podcast interview, Mata explained that his family urged him to consider leaving due to fears that Mourinho might again limit his playing opportunities. His grandfather was especially worried, prompting Mata to seriously contemplate his future at the club.
Despite this advice, Mata chose to stay at United, determined to prove his worth under Mourinho. He stressed that he maintained a positive relationship with the manager and contributed significantly to the team during matches, winning multiple trophies, including the Europa League, FA Cup, and League Cup.
Ultimately, Mata decided against departing, believing in his ability to fight for his place. Over eight years at the club, he made 285 appearances before leaving in June 2022. He then joined Galatasaray as a free agent and had a brief spell in Japan with Vissel Kobe in 2023. Currently, the 37-year-old plays for Western Sydney Wanderers in Australia.
