Why Did FIFA’s Boss Attend Gaza Summit and Support Trump & Israel?
Israel-Hamas Ceasefire and Israeli Hostage Releases
At a recent peace summit in Egypt, FIFA President Gianni Infantino drew attention by standing alongside Donald Trump, symbolizing a broader engagement in the Middle East conflict. Over recent weeks, Infantino has voiced strong support for efforts towards peace, advocating for football to play a role in fostering reconciliation.
Last week, Infantino called on the global football community to back the recent ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, which began on Friday. This development led to the release of the remaining Israeli hostages, who had been kidnapped during Hamas’s attack on October 7, 2023. The release marked the end of a nearly two-year ordeal for these individuals, who appeared visibly changed after their captivity.
During the European Football Clubs General Assembly in Rome, Infantino emphasized the significance of the ceasefire, praising the efforts of international leaders including Donald Trump, who he congratulated on helping facilitate peace. Infantino also expressed hope that the support for peace would extend beyond politics and football, emphasizing the sport’s power to unite and inspire hope.
Following the ceasefire, Infantino called for Trump to be recognized with a Nobel Peace Prize, citing his role in brokering the deal. In messages shared on social media, the FIFA chief highlighted the importance of regional stability and the role of football in rebuilding communities, especially in Gaza and Palestine. He pledged FIFA’s support to rebuild football infrastructure, including pitches and facilities, to bring sport and hope back to affected regions.
The released hostages, including Sergev Kalfon and Evyatar David, were reunited with their families today amid emotional scenes. Their appearance reflected the physical toll of two years of captivity, with some appearing frail and significantly thinner. Israeli leaders, including former President Trump, acknowledged the relief and the heavy human cost behind the joyful reunions, while cautioning about the lingering impacts of the ordeal.
