Gorilla Shatters Glass Wall at San Diego Zoo — Watch the Stunning Video!
Gorilla Charges and Breaks Glass at California Zoo
A large western lowland gorilla caused a startling scene at a zoo in California when it charged at its enclosure’s glass wall, breaking a section of a triple-layered tempered glass panel. The incident was captured on video, revealing the gorilla’s aggressive behavior in front of startled visitors.
The gorilla, named Denny and 10 years old, smashed through one of the glass layers at the San Diego Zoo’s gorilla habitat on Saturday. Fortunately, Denny was unharmed, and zoo staff confirmed he and his companions are now being cared for while the damaged panel is replaced.
Video footage shows the gorilla reportedly launching himself toward the enclosure wall, prompting gasps and screams from visitors as they quickly moved away. Other images depict bystanders inspecting the shattered glass after the incident.
Experts note that such displays are common among adolescent male gorillas, often involving bursts of energy, charging, or physical activity. A zoo spokesperson explained that these behaviors are natural for young males, particularly during adolescence.
Previously, Denny had lived with his siblings, including his brother Maka, who died suddenly in August at age 30 due to a heart condition. Some analysts believe his recent behavior could be linked to emotional stress or grief over Maka’s passing.
Anthropology professor Dr. Erin Riley suggested that the display might have been a form of social dominance, possibly provoked by visitors’ behavior. She added that gorillas generally dislike direct eye contact, which could have contributed to Denny’s agitation.
Western lowland gorillas are the largest primates, with adult males reaching weights of up to 500 pounds. This endangered species faces threats mostly from habitat loss due to deforestation in central Africa.
