Premier League Star: How Nick Woltemade Gains a Psychological Edge at Newcastle
Tyler Adams Attempts Trash Talk to Disrupt Newcastle’s Nick Woltemade
During a recent match, Bournemouth’s midfielder Tyler Adams, who stands at 5ft 9ins, took on the challenge of marking Newcastle United’s towering 6ft 6ins striker Nick Woltemade. To level the playing field, Adams resorted to various tactics, including engaging in verbal banter to distract the opponent.
Adams explained, “I usually mark the biggest players, which involves grappling, gripping, pulling, and sometimes being sneaky. I try my best.” He added that he attempted trash talk to provoke a response, but Woltemade remained surprisingly friendly, making Adams feel somewhat uncomfortable. “He was a very nice guy, actually, and it was a bit unsettling because there was no war of words,” Adams shared.
Tyler Adams attempted trash talk with Nick Woltemade but didn’t get much of a response.
Adams reflected on his basketball aspirations, saying, “I had dreams of becoming a basketball player, but at my height, it was never going to happen. When I looked up at him, I realized I wouldn’t have a future in professional basketball.”
The tactic seemed effective as the match ended in a goalless draw.
Adams has played a key role in Bournemouth’s impressive start to the Premier League season, currently sitting fourth in the table. Recently, he missed a game to be with his pregnant wife but made a notable return to face his former club, Leeds United, at Elland Road. Despite receiving a hostile reception from Leeds fans booing every touch, Adams enjoyed the electric atmosphere, describing it as something he loved.
“There’s an energy I enjoy. I knew what to expect, but I appreciated every moment regardless of the circumstances,” Adams commented.
Adams has been vital to Bournemouth’s progress this season, as they sit comfortably in fourth place.
Next, Bournemouth faces Crystal Palace, where Adams will go up against his fellow USA teammate and friend, defender Chris Richards. Adams noted, “Chris talks a lot off the pitch, but he’s quite quiet during a game.”
He also highlighted the relaxed approach under manager Andoni Iraola. “We don’t talk much after matches. The manager texts us that we don’t need to return until Tuesday, giving us time to recover and prepare for the next challenge,” Adams said.
