Nigeria Team’s Plane Makes Emergency Landing After Windshield Cracks Mid-Flight

Nigeria’s Football Team Emergency Landing After Windshield Crack

A flight carrying Nigeria’s national football team was forced to make an emergency landing after experiencing a cracked windscreen during their return trip from South Africa.

The Super Eagles had traveled home from Polokwane, where they secured a 2-1 victory over Lesotho in a World Cup qualifier. The team was aboard a chartered ValueJet Airline aircraft, the same aircraft used for their journey to South Africa last week.

According to the Nigerian Football Federation, the plane stopped in Luanda, Angola, for refueling. During the flight, the aircraft’s windscreen developed a significant crack, prompting the pilots to execute an emergency landing just 25 minutes after takeoff. Fortunately, everyone on board landed safely in Luanda.

The incident has caused a delay in Nigeria’s plans to reach Uyo, where they are scheduled to face Benin in a crucial World Cup qualifier. Nigerian authorities, including senior government officials, are working to arrange a new aircraft to pick up the team and ensure they arrive in time for the match.

Nigeria’s squad features several high-profile players, including Premier League stars like Calvin Bassey, Samuel Chukwueze, Alex Iwobi, Frank Onyeka, and Tolu Arokodare. Key players such as Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman are also aiming to help the team qualify for their seventh World Cup appearance.

Currently, Nigeria sits third in their group, three points behind leaders Benin, with South Africa in second place. Nigeria must win their upcoming game to improve their chances of automatic qualification, though a spot in the play-offs remains possible if they secure a result.
