EFL Manager Reveals Heartbreaking Family Tragedy Amid Job Struggle
Matt Taylor Opens Up About Family Tragedy Amid Career Challenges
Former football manager Matt Taylor recently shared a deeply personal story about the devastating loss of his infant daughter, Elsie, which coincided with a difficult period in his professional life.
Taylor, who has managed Exeter City, Rotherham, and Bristol Rovers, was managing Rovers when his sister, Hannah, went into labor with her daughter Elsie. During childbirth, complications arose, and Elsie was deprived of oxygen for eight minutes, resulting in no brain activity. She was placed on life support, while Hannah faced severe health issues requiring multiple surgeries.
Throughout this harrowing time, Taylor was caught between hospital visits and preparing for matches, feeling helpless as he received limited updates. Remarkably, his sister’s condition improved after her second operation, but Elsie’s condition worsened, and her life support was eventually turned off. Elsie peacefully passed away in her parents’ arms.
Just a day later, Taylor’s partner Sarah discovered she was pregnant, adding a complex mixture of guilt, fear, and joy to an already overwhelming situation. Despite his absence, the team faced mixed results, and Taylor returned briefly to support his team, but mounting pressure led to his dismissal following a defeat against Birmingham City. Reflecting on the decision, Taylor acknowledged the difficulty but emphasized prioritizing his family’s wellbeing during that challenging time.
After his departure, Taylor and his family moved back to Sheffield, welcoming their third child five weeks ago. He expressed that his family is on a positive path now, and he feels ready to return to management, nearly a year after the personal tragedies and professional setbacks.
Despite the heartbreak, Taylor remains hopeful for the future, emphasizing the importance of family in overcoming life’s toughest moments.
