Former Man United Star Emerges as Surprise Favorite for Rangers Manager Role
Gerrard Declines Rangers Manager Role; Carrick and Rohl Emerging as Alternatives
A former Manchester United midfielder has unexpectedly become a candidate for the managerial position at Rangers, following Steven Gerrard’s decision to decline the offer. Gerrard, who previously led Rangers to the Premiership title in 2021 before moving to Aston Villa, held discussions in London about succeeding Russell Martin. However, sources report Gerrard has communicated to the club’s leadership that he no longer wishes to pursue the role, citing the desire for control over transfer decisions as a key factor.
Meanwhile, club officials, including sporting director Kevin Thelwell and CEO Patrick Stewart, are exploring other options. Among the frontrunners is former Sheffield Wednesday coach Danny Rohl, who has experience coaching at Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig. Rohl’s recent stint at Wednesday, though marred by financial problems, saw him lead the team to a respectable 12th place finish last season.
Another strong contender is Michael Carrick, who most recently managed Middlesbrough. During his tenure, Carrick led Boro to the Championship play-offs in his first year before finishing eighth the next season and signing a new three-year deal. Recently, he was linked with the Rangers vacancy, and his coaching background includes a caretaker role at Manchester United. Carrick is eager to advance his managerial career, viewing the Rangers opening as an opportunity.
The club aims to finalize their new manager during the international break, ahead of their upcoming league match against Dundee United. While Gerrard’s withdrawal is a setback for supporters hoping to see him return, Rangers remain motivated to find the right fit for the position.
