Socceroos Star Benched in World Cup Debut as Aussie Journeyman Shines in Victory over Canada
Socceroos Goalkeeper Faces Tough Competition Ahead of 2026 World Cup After Impressive Win Over Canada
Paul Izzo is emerging as a strong contender to replace captain Mat Ryan as Australia’s first-choice goalkeeper ahead of the 2026 World Cup, following a standout performance in a recent 1-0 victory against Canada in Montreal.
Selected over Ryan and Joe Gauci, Izzo, 30, made eight saves—more than any other Australian goalkeeper in a men’s international match—and demonstrated confidence and composure throughout the game. His commanding presence helped him organize the defense and thwart Canadian attacks effectively.
Izzo, who has previously played for Melbourne Victory and Greek club Xanthi, was informed he would start only the night before the match. Despite this, he delivered an exceptional performance, expressing satisfaction with his display and feeling more comfortable with each international appearance.
“I wasn’t expecting to play, but I was given a chance, and I wanted to make the most of it,” said Izzo. “I aim to become No.1, but I fully respect Maty Ryan’s contributions and work hard to match him. It’s a challenging goal, but I’m committed to it.”
During the tense finale, with Canada searching for an equalizer, Izzo showcased his shot-stopping ability, notably denying Jacob Shaffelburg with a heroic leg effort in the 90th minute. His performance impressed coach Tony Popovic, who praised his response to the pressure.
Popovic emphasized the importance of increasing depth within the squad, noting that Ryan was not selected for this fixture to give others like Izzo a chance to develop. “Paul answered the challenge with his performance. He’s stepping up,” the coach stated confidently.
Izzo acknowledged the hard work required to compete with Ryan’s extensive experience but is determined to continue improving and seize opportunities to secure his spot in future tournaments.
