NJ Gov Race Heats Up: Final Debate Sparks Personal Clash Between Sherrill & Ciattarelli

Final New Jersey Gubernatorial Debate Turns Personal and Heated

The last debate of the campaign season in New Jersey was intense, with candidates Jack Ciattarelli and Rep. Mikie Sherrill exchanging sharp personal attacks. Sherrill blamed Ciattarelli for contributing to the opioid crisis, while Ciattarelli challenged her record at the Naval Academy.

As the race tightened, with polls showing a close contest, Sherrill launched aggressive counterattacks. She accused Ciattarelli of profiting from the opioid industry, referencing controversy over training materials his former company published, which critics said contained industry-friendly misinformation about opioids. She claimed his firm was paid over $12 million for content underwritten by pharmaceutical interests, including arguments downplaying misuse risks and facilitating access to opioids for addicts.

Ciattarelli was pushed into a defensive stance regarding his business dealings.

Ciattarelli responded sharply, criticizing her focus on his past business activities. He pointed out her silence on the Biden administration’s border policies, which he links to the fentanyl crisis, and accused her of opposing efforts to keep the government open during recent shutdowns, criticizing her votes in both administrations.

Another contentious moment involved her disciplinary record at the Naval Academy. Ciattarelli demanded transparency, highlighting that she was banned from walking during her graduation ceremony in 1994 over a cheating scandal, and criticized her for refusing to release her records, claiming they were illegally leaked to his allies. Sherrill declined to release the documents, accusing Ciattarelli of politicizing her military history.

The debate also covered energy policy and national issues. Ciattarelli proposed pulling New Jersey out of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, labeling it a failure costing up to half a billion dollars annually. On national politics, Ciattarelli praised President Trump’s efforts, giving him an “A,” while Sherrill rated his performance an “F.” The candidates also clashed over the ongoing government shutdown, with Sherrill urging action to reopen the government and end the impasse.
