Teen Sentenced to 60 Years to Life for Family Murders
A 19-year-old from New Hampshire has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 60 years after pleading guilty to the 2022 murders of his sister-in-law and her young children. The defendant, Eric Sweeney, was 16 at the time of the crimes, which took place at the family’s Northfield home.
Eric entered the residence armed with a handgun and shot Kassandra Sweeney, 25, along with her sons Benjamin (4) and Mason (23 months). Tragically, Benjamin was shot in the head through his dinosaur costume. Moments before the attack, Kassandra had been filming videos of her children expressing their love for each other, sharing these clips with her husband with a message, “I hope they make you laugh.”
After fleeing the scene, Sweeney falsely claimed there had been a break-in. No motive was established for the crime, but reports indicate he was suffering from severe depression prior to the murders. His family had expressed concerns about his mental health and had attempted to remove him from guardianship due to his spiraling condition.
During sentencing, Sweeney’s defense argued that he had no memory of the events, citing a “broken brain” caused by childhood trauma. He was raised amidst substance abuse and violence, begging on the streets for food at age six, wearing worn-out shoes, and fearing that Christmas gifts would be sold for drugs.
Many family and friends voiced their pain during victim impact statements, with some even suggesting that Sweeney should have attempted to kill himself instead of harming his family. Some expressed hope that he would face violence from fellow inmates, and the judge acknowledged the complexity of his case, balancing punishment with consideration of his difficult upbringing.
Judge John Kissinger emphasized that the sentence reflects the gravity of the crime but also offers a difficult path toward possible rehabilitation. Sweeney will be eligible for parole in 2075, when he is 68 years old.
