October’s Full Harvest Moon: Stunning Photos of 2025’s First Supermoon

October 2025 Harvest Supermoon: A Spectacular Night Sky Display

The Moon dazzled skywatchers on October 6-7, appearing larger and brighter during this special event as it rose over the eastern horizon near Saturn in the constellation Pisces. Known as the Harvest Moon—a full moon closest to the autumn equinox—this phenomenon historically helped farmers work under moonlight to harvest crops before the weather turned colder. In 2025, the Harvest Moon coincided with a supermoon, when the lunar surface appears up to 14% larger and 30% brighter due to its proximity during its 27-day orbit around Earth.

Even if you missed the moonrise, the phase persisted in the days following, making it an excellent opportunity for astrophotography. Enthusiasts around the world captured breathtaking images of this celestial event.

Breathtaking Images of the Harvest Supermoon

Photographer Austin DeSisto captured the full Moon passing behind the Washington Monument, with clouds adding a dramatic touch (see image below). Similarly, Gary Hershorn shot the yellow-hued Moon above the Statue of Liberty at sunset, a result of Rayleigh scattering, which causes the Moon to appear yellow-orange when near the horizon. Hershorn also documented the Moon peeking around New York’s EdgeNYC observation deck, showing a thin sliver left unlit by the Sun.

International astrophotographer Amartya Mishra took a detailed shot of the Moon over Kathmandu, revealing dark lunar seas and impact craters, highlighting the Moon’s intricate surface features. In China, Gong Xianming captured a stunning scene of the Moon rising above traditional architecture during the Mid-Autumn Festival, a holiday dating back 3,000 years.

Additional images show the Moon above Italy’s hills near L’Aquila, with distant castles adding to the scenic view, and a photo from Indonesia capturing a passenger jet crossing the lunar face, demonstrating the event’s global appeal. Such images are available through this link.
