Jerry Jones Fined by NFL for Rude Gesture to Fans — Cowboys Owner’s Baffling Excuse
Jerry Jones Fined by NFL for Rude Gesture During Cowboys Game, Offers Confusing Explanation
The owner of the Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones, has been fined $250,000 by the NFL after he was observed making what appeared to be a rude gesture toward fans during Sunday’s game. Jones asserts that the gesture was misinterpreted and was not intentional.
Despite several injuries to the Cowboys’ offensive line and the absence of star receiver CeeDee Lamb, Dallas secured a convincing 37-22 victory over the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. The win appeared to boost Jones’s confidence, as he was seen seemingly giving the middle finger to the crowd from his VIP suite.
In response to the incident, Jones claimed the gesture was accidental. He stated, “That was inadvertent on my part. It was right after we scored our last touchdown and everyone was excited. I put up the wrong hand. If you want to call it accidental, it was accidental. It was meant to be a thumbs-up and a signal to our fans, not anything hostile.”
The NFL penalized Jones based on the gesture, but he may appeal the fine. The incident marks just the latest controversy in Jones’s tenure as Cowboys owner, which has often been under scrutiny. Recently, he was involved in a high-profile contract dispute with player Micah Parsons, which culminated in a trade of Parsons to the Green Bay Packers in August. Parsons was exchanged for defensive tackle Kenny Clark and two first-round draft picks, and he subsequently signed a four-year, $188 million deal with the Packers.
The Cowboys have adjusted well without Parsons, maintaining a 2-2-1 record after their recent win, while Parsons has managed 2.5 sacks for the Packers, who are currently 2-1-1 following a tie with Dallas last week.
