Arsenal eye ‘Real Madrid-style’ stadium boost to surpass Tottenham and West Ham
Arsenal Considers Major Expansion of Emirates Stadium
Arsenal is exploring plans to significantly expand the Emirates Stadium, aiming to emulate the grandeur of the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid. Currently, the Emirates seats 60,704 fans, making it the second-largest in the Premier League after Old Trafford. However, the club seeks to increase capacity to over 70,000 by redesigning the stands to be steeper, thus providing more seats without extensive structural changes.
The club has studied Madrid’s recent £860 million renovation of their stadium, which included adding approximately 4,000 seats, a 360-degree screen, and a retractable roof and pitch for hosting non-football events. These upgrades led to a doubling of Real Madrid’s matchday revenues to €248 million (£215 million).
Arsenal’s own matchday earnings for 2023-24 reached approximately £132 million, up from £102.6 million the previous season, largely due to their return to the UEFA Champions League. To facilitate the stadium’s transformation, the club might temporarily relocate, with Wembley suggested as a potential venue during construction.
Historically, other top clubs, including Tottenham and Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid, have temporarily moved to alternative venues during extensive renovations. For example, Tottenham played at Wembley during the redevelopment of White Hart Lane, and Real Madrid spent a season at the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium amidst their renovation.
Arsenal’s expansion plans are driven by new board member Otto Maly, who played a key role in the development of Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium—an £4 billion project—and is leading a £7.5 billion mixed-use redevelopment in Los Angeles that includes sports, residences, and entertainment spaces.
Arsenal is considering a significant expansion similar to Real Madrid’s recent upgrades.
The current Emirates Stadium accommodates 60,704 fans, with ambitions to grow further.
Proposed plans include making the stands steeper to add more seating capacity.
