Watch Out for Self-Proclaimed Reformers: David Hogg’s Grift Wa:rn:ing

Controversy Surrounds Young Activist’s Fundraising Failures

David Hogg, once celebrated as a passionate advocate following the tragic 2018 Parkland school shooting, has shifted his focus to political fundraising and influence. While initially positioning himself as a reform-minded voice, recent disclosures reveal he has adopted tactics similar to those of the establishment he critiques.

Hogg founded the political action committee Leaders We Deserve, with claims of supporting progressive leaders ready to challenge the status quo. In April, he vowed to spend $20 million on primary challenges against incumbent Democrats, although this ambition has not materialized as expected. Campaign finance records show the PAC allocated only about $455,000 toward supporting candidates—most of whom faced defeat—except for Zohran Mamdani in New York, who received roughly $300,000 for his campaign. However, Mamdani’s success was largely due to significant additional funding from outside sources.

Alarmingly, the majority of the PAC’s expenditure was directed elsewhere, with over $2.5 million spent on consultants and nearly $1.1 million on digital advertising. Even more astonishingly, the group directed nearly $5,000 to a fitness class subscription—highlighting a misallocation of funds that seemingly contradicts its political mission.

Overall, Leaders We Deserve has demonstrated a pattern of spending on self-promotion and consultancy fees rather than directly supporting winning campaigns. The financial report emphasizes the importance of tracking where money flows in Washington’s complex ecosystem of lobbyists, influencers, and political operatives—many of whom often prioritize personal or organizational gain over meaningful reform.

While fresh voices call for change, the path to genuine political overhaul remains tangled in an intricate web of influence and private interests, with some exploiting the very systems they aim to overhaul.
