Judge Blocks Trump Admin from Sending Troops to Portland

Judge Blocks Deployment of Federal Troops to Portland

A federal court in Oregon has temporarily prevented the Trump administration from sending hundreds of National Guard troops to Portland amid ongoing protests against ICE operations that have persisted for over 100 days.

US District Judge Karin Immergut, appointed by former President Trump, issued a ruling stating that deploying active-duty military personnel to Portland would violate both the US Constitution and federal law that restricts military involvement in domestic law enforcement. She emphasized the importance of the delicate relationship and separation of powers between federal and state authorities.

In her decision, she noted that demonstrations outside a Portland immigration facility had been relatively small and non-violent before the president’s order, asserting that the presidential response was not based on factual circumstances.

The restraining order is set to expire in two weeks, and the White House has yet to comment publicly. Recently, President Trump announced plans to send 200 National Guard troops to support immigration enforcement and combat what he called “domestic terrorists,” prompting lawsuits from state officials attempting to block the deployment. Trump has already dispatched troops to other cities experiencing protests, including Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Chicago, and Memphis.

Portland protests have been intense, with some involving confrontations with federal agents and acts of vandalism, especially targeting an ICE detention center. Authorities have claimed that the facility has been under siege for consecutive nights with little local law enforcement assistance, as city officials reportedly ordered officers to stand down.

Additionally, President Trump announced an effort to review federal funding for Portland, vowing to cut aid to states allowing what he described as anarchy. This move has been accompanied by an increase in federal resources to establish law and order in the city.

Meanwhile, investigations have been launched into Portland police conduct, including the arrest of a conservative reporter amid ongoing unrest.
