Beanie the Sloth Debuts at Elmwood Park Zoo

Newborn Two-Toed Sloth Debuts at Elmwood Park Zoo

A charming two-toed sloth named Beanie’s Baby has been introduced to the public at Elmwood Park Zoo in Norristown, Pennsylvania. The tiny infant, born in August and weighing just two pounds, was named after its mother, Beanie, who was pregnant while at Rhode Island’s Roger Williams Park Zoo.

Throughout her pregnancy, Beanie was closely monitored, and she was transferred to Elmwood Park Zoo midway through her pregnancy for safe and comfortable delivery. The zoo’s staff explained that moving her at this stage allows enough time for her to adapt to her new environment before giving birth.

While the gender of Beanie’s Baby remains unknown—since outward appearances are identical in male and female sloths—the zoo will perform DNA testing after about five months to determine if it is a boy or girl.
