Mamdani Likely to Follow NYC DSA Members’ Will if Elected, Leaders Say

NYC DSA Leaders Emphasize Loyalty to Radical Agenda and Close Ties to Zohran Mamdani

Members of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) in New York City expressed their expectations that Zohran Mamdani would follow the organization’s radical policies and remain committed to its principles, asserting that endorsed candidates are expected to align with the membership’s will.

The recent “NYC DSA 101” gathering at their Lower East Side headquarters revealed the organization’s tight control over candidate support, with leaders highlighting their ongoing influence even after elections. One chapter leader noted, “Our endorsed candidates work very closely with us, and many campaign staff are DSA members or leaders.”

Mamdani’s rise from a lesser-known candidate to a leading Democratic nominee is credited largely to the DSA’s volunteer effort, which the leaders say was instrumental in his campaign’s success. Leaders emphasized their role in Mamdani’s political journey, with one stating, “He wouldn’t have run for mayor without the DSA’s backing.”

Attendees learned that Mamdani would be expected to meet regularly with senior party members if elected. The party’s influence extends into policymaking through its “Socialists in Office Committee,” which issues weekly directives on voting and legislative priorities, including bills to decriminalize prostitution, shut down immigration enforcement facilities, and promote supervised injection sites. Mamdani, as a Queens assembly member since 2021, has introduced legislation reflecting these policies.

The gathering also featured a critique of the Democratic Party, with members describing it as out of touch and driven by image rather than material issues. Leaders acknowledged the difficulty of running as independent or on other party lines in New York but emphasized that running under the Democratic label is currently advantageous for their candidates.

Many members expressed disillusionment with the Democratic establishment, criticizing its treatment of marginalized groups and linking their political shift to Mamdani’s campaign, which inspired new grassroots enthusiasm. The NYC DSA is actively seeking a new headquarters to accommodate its rapid growth, which has expanded to nearly 11,000 members, primarily young Gen Z and Millennial supporters, many recruited through Mamdani’s campaign efforts.
