Vehicle Barricades Itself at Los Angeles City Hall, Prompting Emergency Response
A man unexpectedly drove onto the steps of Los Angeles City Hall and barricaded himself inside his vehicle, leading to a major police response and evacuation. The incident began around 4:08 p.m. when officers from LAPD Security Services responded to a suspicious vehicle parked along Spring Street outside City Hall.
The driver, described as a middle-aged man, refused to comply with commands to exit the vehicle. The car was seen mounted on the stairs near Broadway, with two handwritten signs displayed on the dashboard—one reading “Don’t Want To Hurt No Body” and the other stating “I NEED UR HELP D TRUMP U.S. VET.” The man appeared to be holding what looked like an oxygen tank.
Authorities deployed additional LAPD units, including SWAT, to establish communication and encourage the man’s voluntary surrender. Streets around the civic center were closed, and nearby City Hall staff and visitors, including those in Grand Park, were evacuated out of caution. Despite the tense situation, there were no reports of weapons or explosive devices inside the vehicle, and no injuries were reported.
After hours of negotiations with crisis negotiators, the man was taken into custody. Authorities have not released his identity or his motives for the act. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass confirmed she was being kept updated as the situation unfolded.
Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene, ensuring public safety while negotiations continued. The incident was resolved peacefully, with authorities emphasizing there were no threats of weapons or explosives linked to the vehicle.
