Tuchel Warns Arsenal Star: Good Teammate Isn’t Enough for England Future
Tuchel Issues Warning to Arsenal’s Lewis-Skelly Over England Future
Thomas Tuchel has cautioned Myles Lewis-Skelly, an emerging young talent at Arsenal, emphasizing that his current standing in the England squad depends on gaining regular playing time at club level. Despite including the 19-year-old in England’s latest 24-man squad for upcoming fixtures, Tuchel highlighted the importance of consistent performance for future selection.
Lewis-Skelly was called up after impressing last season, quickly stepping into Arsenal’s lineup amid injury crises, and earning notable recognition, including a debut goal for England against Albania. However, at Arsenal this season, he faces stiff competition from Italy international Riccardo Califiori, with Mikel Arteta favoring the latter for his experience.
The teenager’s form has dipped, and he has yet to start a Premier League game this season. Tuchel stressed that being a good team-mate and showing positive attitude in camps is commendable but insufficient if not backed by regular club appearances. He stated, “Performance on the field is crucial, and that will influence his future with the national team.”
While praising Lewis-Skelly’s contributions and attitude during recent camps, Tuchel made it clear his continued inclusion depends on his club performances. The manager added, “He was a valuable part of a successful camp, but in the long run, consistent club performance is essential.”
Looking ahead to the upcoming World Cup, Lewis-Skelly is eager to secure more opportunities with Arsenal to re-establish himself in the team, aiming to demonstrate he can meet both club and country expectations.
